    Geography & Habitat

The geography and habitat of the Dhikala Zone in Jim Corbett National Park are among the most diverse and ecologically rich in the entire reserve. Spanning vast stretches of wilderness, Dhikala is located deep within the core area of the park and showcases a unique mix of grasslands, dense Sal forests, riverine belts, and foothills of the Himalayas. The zone is especially famous for its expansive Chaurs (savanna-like grasslands), such as Dhikala Chaur and Phulai Chaur, which provide excellent grazing grounds for herbivores like deer, elephants, and wild boar—making them ideal hunting grounds for predators like tigers and leopards. Running through the heart of the zone is the Ramganga River and its associated Ramganga Reservoir, which not only enhances the area's scenic beauty but also serves as a vital water source that attracts crocodiles, gharials, and migratory birds. Interspersed between the grasslands and water bodies are dense Sal and mixed deciduous forests, which offer shelter and cover to a wide range of wildlife. This rich mosaic of habitats supports a high level of biodiversity, making Dhikala the most iconic and ecologically significant safari zone in Jim Corbett National Park.
